To commemorate our 50th release, HUSH has collected, not coincidentally, fifty unreleased, out of print and rare tracks from the various acts it has worked with since its inception in the late 90s. This enhanced CD takes advantage of the near ubiquity of jukebox software like iTunes and the proliferation of iPods by offering thirty-six high quality mp3 tracks (accessible via computer--just drag and drop) in addition to the fourteen songs which play on any standard CD player. The twenty page booklet interweaves the music with photos and anecdotes from the label’s golden past, rooted in DIY determinism, scrappy community and a clean aesthetic. The fourteen primary songs offer a contemporary glimpse into the label, where maturing artists refine their craft for ever-growing niche audiences, alongside nationally established acts. As with the first compilations HUSH issued, the mix is cohesive, compelling, and texturally engaging. Artists hop-scotch from song to song assisting each other with their productions, while Kind of Like Spitting goes so far as to offer up a cover version of Blanket Music's "Hips". The remaining thirty six mp3 tracks highlight the out of print first-fruits from the label and offer out-takes from various sessions over the past six years. This is a lovingly crafted, highly personal, richly detailed audio-visual document illuminating what some might call a modest regional "movement". In a word, community.
